Zumo 550 or SP 2820?

Here is a comparison of the 'not so obvious' differences between the Garmin Zumo 550 and the StreetPilot 2820 (probably you'll find this particularly useful if you have a 2610 and are thinking of upgrading)

· Zumo uses Sirf III antenna so is better in cities or where there are lots of trees.
(For about 50 Euros you can buy an external antenns for the 2820 which improves it)
· Zumo interface is more friendly to beginners
· Zumo is less expensive than 2820
· Zumo has a battery built in (2820 requires external power to be available for use)

· 2820 has more Route option settings and generally more settings available than the Zumo
· 2820 can categorise favourite waypoints into groups, whereas the Zumo only stores them as favourites
· 2820 has a light sensor that automatically dims the display when you go into a tunnel, the Zumo does not
· 2820 has volume settings according to speed of travel (i.e. low, medium, high) the Zumo does not
· 2820 can load routes and track so that a track is also visible on the screen. With the Zumo you need to convert the track into a route before you can use it (meaning you might lose track information you wanted to keep)
· 2820 has route choice 'Fastest time' or 'Shortest Distnce' as prompted, so you can choose it as you set up navigation per route. The Zumo has this only as a unit setting for all routes
· 2820 screen quality is higher than Zumo
· 2820 has a QWERTY keyboard, the zumo uses ABCDE, which is not standard
· 2820 can set specific roads to be avoided, the zumo cannot.
· 2820 has additional compass features on screen that the Zumo doesn't

Zümo fits in most jacket pockets, 2820 doesn't

I migrated from a 2610 to a Zümo and initially I missed some of the tweaks and settings from years of 2610 use.

But after a while I got used to the Zümo and I quite like it now.
No regrets.

Most important plus points for me:

• much betterantenna
• ease of use
• size
• built-in battery
• huge track log capacity

The 2820 is a discontinued product and therefore on sale for EUR 300. This is probably the best MC-GPS buy today!
