Default FAQ: Garmin told me that MapSource is a third party product, what does that mean?

MapSource is a framework and doesn’t actually do anything useful without Map data.

City Navigator is an example of a map the works on MapSource. When you buy a Garmin unit, you will (if we’re talking about a Zumo, for example) you will get a version of City Navigator supplied with it.

When you install City Navigator on your pc, it will automatically install MapSource Framework to view the map on a PC.

So as far as the end user is concerned MapSource and the Map product (e.g. City Navigator) are integrated and provided to you.

Garmin probably told you MapSource was a third party product to cover themselves for support issues relating to it, but they do ship it with a map on a CD/DVD when you buy a version of City Navigator.
