Default paying for map updates ?

Just had a reminder for my Zumo550 saying the map was over 12 monthes old and go to Garmin for latest maps.I was very surprised to find that there was a charge of over 100USD for new maps. Do other sat nav systems charge for there updates ???

Some do and some don't, the problem is that Garmin are the best units for motorcyclists, so you're a bit trapped there I'm afraid.

One way to easily save a bit of money is to onlt update every second version (as often the updates between one version and the next are small anyway), and an upgrade is from any previous version to the newest version.

e.g.
If I have version 9 of City Navigator, I can pay to upgrade to 2008 for say 80 Euros, then when version 2009 comes out, I can pay to upgrade again for another 80 Euros.

Or, alternatively, I can just use version 9 for as long as it's useful then skip straight to the latest version, avoiding in between version upgrade costs.

HTH,

David
