Default Nuvi 750 Motorcycle Mount

Personally, I don't think it's a very good idea to mount a nuvi on a motorbike as I think the shock and vibration with shorten its life. But if you want to only use it occasionally, probably if you buy on of these kits:

RAM Garmin nüvi® 710, nüvi® 750, nüvi® 760, nüvi® 770 & nüvi® 780 GPS Mounts

and couple it with a standard ram handlebar mount for a motorcycle, that should do the trick.

HTH,

David

Are the Zumo/Rider units ruggedised other than waterproofing.
Surely all components are surfacemount so no leads can break, light is LED so no filament.
Are there any known life issues with Nuvi, I have just bought 760 as it is at least half the price of comparable bike models.

Hi there,

In general the Nuvi units are somewhat less resistant to vibration and not as shock proof as the Zumo, also the cradle is not as robust.

That said, if you are careful (and don't use it off-road or in rain a lot) The hi-tech automotive range of units (such as the Nuvi 700 series) are excellent.

One thing to bear in mind though is that the software updates for the Zumo will likely be bike specific, so if new software features are introduced, you might miss them on the Nuvi then.

Otherwise a good choice if you as me and many of 700 series units come with TMC built in which the Zumo does not have.

I am also concerned about the 760's cradle so I bought a RAM mount for on bike, also got a sunshield from a US seller on Ebay
I will cover the speaker, aerial socket and main power plate with adhesive tape to keep moisture out.
The only question is around using the mini USB socket to power my nuvi on the bike as I have installed a 1.8m lead from power adapter plugged into lighter socket I put in under pillion seat. But plugging in a USB lead switches the nuvi in to PC mode. How do I overcome this?

As I know there isn't any way to do this.

If it was me I'd try to fabricate a power adapter that was more like the original Garmin one for the Nuvi (is it possible to modify the ram mount at all)

Incidentally, I used a Quest in the standard car mount on my BMW GS for a couple of years without problems even during a bit of off road it stayed in the cradle fine, so if you can't find solution for the power, one solution might be to simply run it in the original cradle and power it off that.

Other than that I can't offer a suggestion I'm afraid.

I found this Car Charger POWER ADAPTER for Garmin nuvi 760,770,780 on eBay, also, GPS Accessories, GPS, Consumer Electronics (end time 03-Mar-09 22:11:52 GMT)
as they say it won't put the unit in PC mode, any thoughts?

Right, I've found the answer to USB power on my 760, probably applies to other 700 series.
If you plug a USB power lead in the unit it goes into PC mode, then unplug the lead and re-connect it. Nuvi then runs on USB power OK
This means I can use my RAM mount
