Default 2610 info needed

hi

new to the forum and need some help with a 2610.

Story is, im off to france in June, a mate with no PC has loaned me his 2610 which was way out of date, so i registered it in my name with garmin, updated the software etc and ordered the new maps dvd for Europe, got it unlocked last night, but when i went to transfer maps to the unit, i have found it only has a 256 card in so im only really getting the UK down to the unit.

Can i stick a 4gig card in and download the whole of Europe in?

Would any compact flash card work or is there anything i should avoid?

I know i could just download the regions im travelling but i was wanting to do the lot at once as a thankyou for the loan of the unit.

cheers for any help you can give

thanks

mark

Hi There Kendo,

I believe the answer to your question is yes, the only uncertain point would be which size of compact flash card can the 2610 support (probably not 4GB I would think) a friend of mine (migsel) had a 1gb in his though so you could try that, that would give you more than half of Europe, or 2gb would give you about 95%

HTH,

David

Just had a quick look and it seems as if 2gb would work, so I'd get one of those, what you'll miss from the map will be almost nothig with 2 GB (complete map is only about 2.1 or 2.2 for Europe)

Yes, that's correct. The main thing is to check that they will unlock properly, a quick way to do this is to select only one block, then send that to the unit and restart the unit and try and navigate in that block (to see if it has unlocked) otherwise you may wait a couple of hours to do the whole map, then realise it's still locked.

good point, iv already got the uk/ireland maps down so ill try them.

last thing (hopefully) the card in the 2610 is a sandisk standard grade 256mb compactflash

i take it any of these 2gb would work ok???

Amazon.co.uk: sandisk 2gb compactflash - Electronics & Photo: Electronics & Photo

not sure with the standard grade on the card - but the ultra etc would work ok?

thanks again

kendo

Compact Flash should be standard, but I must say that I haven't tried an ultra in an older device, presumably they are all made to a particular compatibility standard so I would suspect they work, best thing though if not sure is to go for an old one (if you can find one.)

One way to avoid finding out too late would be to try to swap one out of an existing device to try it. (my digital SLR has an ultra card in it for example) otherwise just buy it and try it, or take it to a shop where the staff are helpful and maybe they'll let you try it in the shop.

If it were me, I'd just buy it and try, I'm 90% sure it will work.

Default StreeetPilot 2610 with Compact Flash

Hi there kendo,

Compact Flash up to 2 gb works fine - I have tried Sandisk cards in my 2610 and they give no trouble at all, in both Ultra and Extreme varieties.

I toured Austria with this combination last year and had no issues - going to cross the puddle again this Summer, with no worries re. navigation.

Hope you have as much success as I have.

BTW, beware post code navigation - it takes a bit of patience.

Ralph
