Default Streetpilot2820/Motorrad Nav.III screen frozen

Hi, we have a problem again with my husbands GPS system. My husband took his BMW bike in for 6000 mile service. A few days after he got it back and was ready to go on a ride (Saturday) we noticed that when we tried to get to the address we put in the screen was frozen. When I say frozen I mean when we turned on the GPS and it would go through the startup and the menu appeared the MAP had a box around it and we could not push any of the other icons like "Where to Go", settings etc. A couple of times it did show a different screen "calibration" and when we followed the dot to calibrate we were told that calibration failed. Well, Sunday I took the GPS off the bike and put it on my laptop and suddenly it worked. Put it back on the bike still worked. Today we checked it out again (Friday) we are having the same freezing up problems. Any suggestions?? I emailed Garmin because it was too late to call.
Thanks, Heidi

Hi there,

If the screen is frozen, the first thing that I would try is doing a hard reset on the unit and then loading on the latest firmware for the unit.

Doing a hard reset will unfortunately lose quite a bit of the data on the unit, but it does free up memory and usually allows you to get started again.

It's also possible that after a hard reset that you may have to reload the maps onto the unit so make sure that you have a copy of the unlock code for the unit to hand

To hard reset the 2820, do the following:

Hold down the Map and Menu buttons when the unit is off and switch on the unit.

The latest Garmin firmware for this unit is about a year old and is available here:
Garmin: StreetPilot 2820 Software Update Collection

HTH,

David

Hi David, thanks for the info. Guess I will have to download the firmware and maybe also the audio/voice. Since we bought the bike second hand from a dealer with no CD for the GPS I am always a bit worried when it comes to the GPS. This is so strange - this morning it worked again. But my husband can not depend on a system that works only sometimes.
Thanks again
Heidi

Hi there,

In order to avoid nervousness in future about the GPS you could contact Garmin and ask them if they have a record of the unlock code for your GPS (if the previous owner had registered the unit, Garmin will have a record of it matched to the serial number of the unit)

Once you have an unlock code you can borrow or burn a copy of the MapSource CD from someone and you'll always be able to load the maps onto the unit again.
