Default Routes/Tracks to SD Card

To the Forum.
Can you help me - How do you save a journey ( not via Mapsource - ) from a Zumo 550to the SD card ? I am proposing a 3000 mile (4600k) summer trip and wish to archive the run each day to the SD card so that I do not overload the internal memory and lose detail.
Have tried in the past but seem to be doing something wrong.
Thanks in advance.

Press "CLICK WHERE TO" then press "ROUTES", select a route, press "SHARE", then tick on whatever routes you want. Press "EXPORT" and the routes are sent to the SD card.
A 3000 mile route would not overload the Zumo internal memory , but the 50 route limit would affect you if you break the journey into more than 50 routes. Highly unlikely I'd say.

The easiest way really, to put routes on the SD card is via Mapsource and then into the Zumo (presupposing that you have a PC card reader). When the Zumo prompts new data found when card is inserted just ignore then import only when you want the routes for the day etc. To retrieve the routes click on the "WRENCH" icon , then click "USER DATA" then "IMPORT DATA" then select routes to "IMPORT" into the Zumo

N.B : Now having said all this, make sure your firmware is 3.80 on the Zumo and MapSource is 6.13.6. , because if not, this might be your problem to start with

Default Routes/track to SD Card

Jaws 100 - Thanks for the reply - Yes, I am on NT 10 firmware - software 3.80 with M/S 6.13.6. - and I was using the wrong method. The reason I like to do it this way is that I can choose my route for the day that morning (or the previous night) if there is a place I wish to see or told about or to avoid bad weather etc. I go that way.
I basically wish to use the SD card (now 2gb - no mp3) as an aide-memoire as to where I have been on my trip and the roads traversed. Any other tips from anyone for this use would be useful.
I find that a mapsource route is somewhat restrictive to my style of solitary touring with so much time spent at home before the journey, setting up multiple waypoints to the destination and return etc and if there is problem still having to find a deviation (map required). As someone once said on a website, the young pick a destination, the older rider picks a time to leave !!!

Any other ideas re this, welcomed. Thanks.

Aha! I think I see what you want to do.
You can use your trip-log to do what you require as an aide-memoire by going into "Manage Trip Log" and "save as route" at the end of each day . You can then edit and rename and "Share" to the SD card and then remove route from the Zumo internal memory, then "Clear Trip Log" for that day.

To Jaws 100 - Thanks very much. Will try both out over the next few
journeys.
Is there any difference in the end result (ie how- where- one route or
a list of routes for each day) of the two methods?
Thanks

Default Routes /Tracks to SD Card

Hi - to all who have helped with my query but I have found a new difficulty.
When I save a route to SD Card it now does save it but what I now find is that the next save overwrites the 1st route. I can change this by adding a number to the GPX file but I cannot find out how to do this without a computer. The previous route is saved in archive on the Zumo and can be found via Mapsource but this defeats the whole purpose of saving the route on the card as it is still taking up space on the Zumo drive.
Help please !

Hi Nomad, first of all, I've only ever downloaded the routes to SD card at the end of separate days on a ride out and uploaded to a PC to edit or whatever ! hence my previous post.

OK I've looked into your problem and see what you mean about the overwriting the route on the card in GPX. I have approached your problem in different ways and TBH I cannot find a way around it other than having a laptop with you.

The only suggestion I can make is to carry a few cards with you and bulk download a few days logs to a card for segments of your trip. (Not ideal I would think)

Having said all this I would not worry about the space on the internal memory of the Zumo on your trip as there is more than adequate space on board the 550. I have done a 4500km trip last year and it only used up about 30 - 40% of the trip log from what I can remember.

Maybe someone else out there has a suggestion to overcome this, but I don't think their is one, but then again...................!!!!

Hi Jaws - thanks - yes - thanks for confirming that.
What I think I will do now is to return to the original supplied basemap (had the IQue 1600 one installed) which will give me another 20+gb of space which should suffice.
Do not tihink carrying a laptop on the bike entirely practical.
May try Zumo Forums to see if there is any info there.
Regards.

Default What about using another device?

Hi There,

Had you thought about the idea of using another device to edit the route names? something more handy than a laptop that is capable of renaming files only, like a phone or PDA that also takes an sd card?

Example:

Share the route onto the SD card, swap the SD card into your mobile phone, rename the file or files there, swap the card back into your zumo.

Some digital cameras or PDAs would probablt also allow renaming of files, if your phone or PDA take mini SD cards, you can get ab adapter piece and use that in your zumo too (I haven't tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work)

Additionally, there are some clever things you can do with the 'active trip log' on other units (although I have not tried them on a zumo) this may also offer something . . .
More here about that:

HTH,

David

Hi John, David - Tried out the mobile phone idea last night and it is a beaut. I have a Nokia 6300 and it uses micro sd cards. If the micro sd card from the Zumo (unfortunately max 2gb), is put in slot, go into 'applications', the route card with the original name can be modified, then return microcard to Zumo for the next route. Repeat as required and if you do it by date, you have a dated table of routes.
Also you do not get multiple routes saved in the Zumo taking up more space.
Brilliant idea.
I must say a couple of extra sd cards is a lot easier on the pocket than a laptop!!!
Thanks very much.
Will now hibernate until the next crisis!

George
