Angry Don't want to be rerouted

Hello again

I seem to have encountered a problem which applies to my Zumo 550 and Mapsource, both with latest firmware/software.

I have created a route with various way/via points to take me through specific roads to my destination. Whilst traveling I decided I wanted to delete one of the via points (using the edit add/remove points). To my horror the unit recalculated the route to final destination using motorways (which I had specifically avoided) and missing some of the way/via points altogether. When I got home I checked my route in Mapsource deleted the way point in question and sure enough the same thing happened again.

This is not to bad if I am just messing about in the area where I live, but I am planning a trip to the Italian/Austrian Alps this year and would be most upset if after spending hours if not days planning my routes, I was to be taken off course by the device.

Has anybody encountered this problem before and if so is it correctable?

Pino

Default Yes

There are a couple of points to this. The first is that deleting route waypoints is never really a good idea, can I ask why you wanted to do this?

I found that if after you load the routes onto your unit via MapSource, if you then manually save the file as GPX format in MapSource, then drag and drop the saved gpx file to Garmin\GPX folder of the unit, it's stored in the import area of your unit (and you don't have to import the route immediately) so that way, you've potentially got a backup.

HTH,

David

I store a 100% backup of my routes and waypoints on the SD card and import or delete as where and when I want them. The beauty of this, is that if you mess with a route or waypoint on the unit and screw them up you can re-import them from the SD card.

Same is true of course, as David said about saving to the GPX folder of the unit.

Anway, just my way of doing things I guess !!!

Pino, if you delete a way-point or via point on a route it will always recalculate the route and not always to your liking. Their is not any easy way to correct this other than redoing the route on the unit when on the road. If you have enough way-points for the area your travelling in its easy enough to re-build a route.

A little trick I use at times to veer away from a route is to zoom out (or pan the map) on the screen, touch a point on the screen where I want to go and hit go. Then pick a point back on the route and press go and you can rejoin the route where you want to without adjusting the route. A stylus pen is pretty much neccesary for this for accuracy on the screen.

Hello
thank you David and John for the replies.

To answer David question as to why I would want to delete a way point: if while I am traveling I decide it is getting late or for instance don't want to go to a specific point anymore, then it would make sense to delete that item from the list; providing that is, the device would not re-route and thus loosing the said route.

The ideas of saving files as GPX format and copying them onto the device in the /GPX folder and backing routes etc on an SD are very useful and I shall adopt them both.

I would suggest that the easiest thing to do in this situation would either be to simply navigate to another location directly (without deleting your existing route or any of the via waypoints on it) or for you to pan around the map on the unit and mark the new location as 'favourite' (waypoint) then navigate to that.

As you probably realised , Garmin routes use a special type of waypoint (called a via point) in routes, so deleting them will result in you route being deleted or unrecoverably amended.

I guess it is a bit strange to start with, but I've kind of got used to it
