Unhappy 'Recalculate' ignores planned route

I have found that if road circumstances (detours, road works etc.) result in a recalculation by Zumo all waypoints ahead on a planned (MapSource) route are ignored and the new route follows either Shortest or Fastest according to how the GPS is set. Why cannot Garmin get the machine to offer a "Recover to planned route" option by which the recalculation works back along the existing planned route to link up with the deviated position?

Is there a way round this 'cos I'm sick of having a recalculation, to go around a minor deviation, throw out the remainder of a lengthy and carefully planned route. Can Garmin not get it in their heads that we are not all simply interested in the final destination - or am I the only one who wants to ride the "interesting" roads and enjoy sightseeing along the way?

Hi there,

There are two things I could recommend here (neither of which are perfect)

The first is what I do and that is simply to put the unit map view in 2D (i.e. North Up or Track Up)and switch off the recalculcate. Having the map set up in 2D allows you to more easily get back to the route as you can see where you are in relation to the route, this is more difficult in the 3D view.

The second is to simply re-navigate the route again, I recently had my Zumo stolen so I'm unable to check this but if the behaviour is the same as other similar units, if you choose to re-navigate the route (i.e where to -> routes -> select your route) I think the unit should start navigating from where you are on the route or at least from the next waypoint.

HTH,

David

Exclamation 'Recalculate' ignores planned route

Thanks for that Dave. Actually, having previously worked with a StreetPilot I only use the 2D display - with the blue pointer icon, not the 'biker' image.
I may not be explaining things very well. Let me take an example. Last week's route from St Flour to Boussac in France was 177 miles long, with 28 waypoints on the MapSource plot, to take us along the best biking/scenic roads. Just before Murol there were roadworks and the GPS recalculated the WHOLE route from that point (with the setting on 'Fastest'). It routed us some 30 miles to the east, up the Autoroute A71, completely ignoring 12 waypoints designed to take us "the pretty way' across country!
Experimenting at home, on MapSource and using 'Shorter distance', the route is closer to the original but still passes through none of the waypoints, simply ending up at the selected hotel. Ah-ha!
In working this through I may have solved my own problem. If, after a recalculation (probably with the 'Shorter' setting) we progress a few miles beyond the "Deviation" (note the fluent French accent n'est pas?) and I then re-select the original route, I think that the Zumo will put us back on track.
I shall experiment asap and report back.
